Smart DocsCapture with Extension
The SmartDox browser extension is the recorder. It runs in a side panel next to the page you are documenting, so you can see the flow and the capture at the same time.
Every click, keystroke and navigation is captured with its surrounding context: the action, the element acted on, the page, a screenshot, and the rectangle of what was clicked.
💡 The side panel keeps working while you switch tabs, scroll, and fill forms. You do not need to keep it focused.
The single most important setting, and the one to decide before you press Record.
With the toggle on, the capture is pinned to its starting tab. If you switch to email mid-recording to check something, nothing from that tab is recorded — no screenshot, no step, no trace of it in the guide.
⚠️ This is the setting that prevents the classic accident: recording a product flow, glancing at your inbox, and finding your inbox in the published documentation.
With the toggle off, the extension behaves the way it always did — it follows you to whichever tab is in the foreground. That is genuinely required for some flows, so it remains available; it is just no longer the default.
If you flip the toggle during a session, the extension re-pins to the tab you are on, so the change takes effect immediately rather than at the next recording.
Passwords and tokens are masked in the browser as you record, before anything is uploaded. The masking happens at capture time on your machine, not as a server-side cleanup pass afterwards.
That ordering is the point: an unmasked secret never leaves the device, so there is no window in which it existed on a server and was later scrubbed.
⚠️ Masking covers credential-shaped fields. It is not a general redaction tool. Record with a demo account and plausible-but-fake data rather than relying on masking to hide customer names, invoice numbers, or internal IDs.
Practical habits:
Discard throws the recording away. The confirmation appears in the panel itself, centred, rather than as a browser dialog — so it is styled, placed where you are looking, and cannot be lost behind another window.
Confirming shows a loader on the Discard button while the work completes, so there is no ambiguous moment where you cannot tell whether the click registered.
You can dismiss the confirmation with Escape or by clicking outside it. Nothing is deleted until you confirm.
⚠️ Discard is not undoable. If you are unsure, stop the recording and keep it — an unused capture costs nothing, and a re-recorded one costs another run through the workflow.
Stopping a recording produces a SmartDoc session. From there:
One session can produce many artefacts, so there is no need to decide what it is for at record time.
